How to Feed a Maltipoo Puppy

There are many things that should be considered when feeding your Maltipoo pup. In this article we will go over proper scheduling, meal sizes, and much more. Over or under feeding your pup can lead to them developing diseases and other issues later in their lives.

How Often You Should feed Your Maltipoo

Small dog breeds like the Maltipoo tend to do the best with consistent feedings that ensure they don’t go too long on an empty stomach. Inconsistent feeding may cause them to vomit and could also cause hypoglycemia due to a drop in their blood sugar. This is an extremely common issue that new dog owners face with smaller breeds and can lead to costly vet bills and even death of your pup.

Below is a recommended schedule for your Maltipoo.

Feeding schedule for a Maltipoo aged 2-3 months old:

With puppies this young we recommend free feeding your puppy, which means you leave food out for your pup to eat whenever they are hungry. Even though you are leaving the food out all the time it is important to regularly clean the bowl to remove germs and bacteria.

It may take some time for your pup to learn where their food bowl is located. Help your pup find their food for the first couple of days by leading them to the food bowl. If you do this they should have no trouble finding their bowl later as long as you are consistent in where you place it.

Feeding schedule for Maltipoos older than 3 months:

After your puppy is older than 3 months the risk of hypoglycemia is much lower and you should be safe to start scheduling their feedings in place of free feeding. Schedule 3 small feedings for them every day at consistent times. This will make your puppy more comfortable with a routine and is also healthy for them because it will keep their glucose levels even throughout the day. .

    Timing of Meals

There aren’t specific times that are best for every puppy and you will likely need to work around your own personal schedule. Many people find it easier to feed their Maltipoo at the same time they are eating. As a general rule the first feeding of the day should probably be during the first hour after your furry friend wakes up. The second feeding generally comes around midday and is usually the most difficult for pet owners to manage due to being at biographycon work. A solution that most people find valuable in this scenario is using an automatic dispenser that is set on a timer. The final meal works best if it is an hour or two before they go to sleep. Feeding your pup right before bed will increase the likelihood of them having an accident fleepbleep inside.

How Much Should I Feed My Maltipoo

Many new Maltipoo parents face issues with their puppy not eating much initially. They put 3 bowls of food out per day and some pups will pick at the food but never entirely finish a serving. This can be very stressful but there are some tricks you can use to encourage your pup to eat more. Many puppies have trouble eating dry dog food so you can try different brands of wet food until you find one that works. If you plan on having your dog eat dry food for the most part you will want to mix in a little dry food with the wet to get them accustomed to it. You should continually increase the ratio of dry/wet until they are eating all dry food.

Recommended portions for your dog will be based on their weight. Bigger dogs will eat more food. A full grown Maltipoo will eat much more than it did as a puppy. Here are some guidelines for how much to feed your Maltipoo based on their weight.

    • A Maltipoo between 3 to 4 lbs should be eating 1/4 to 1/3 cups of food per day.
    • A Maltipoo between 4 to 8 lbs, 1/2 to 3/4 cups of food per day.
    • A Maltipoo between 8 to 12 lbs, 3/4 to 1 cup of food per day.
    • A Maltipoo between 12 to 16 lbs, 1 to 1 and 1/4 cups of food per day.

    Conclusion

Before making the important decision of whether or not to bring a Maltipoo puppy into your life you should consider the time and effort that it will take to properly care for them. It is easy to get caught up in the cuteness and excitement of a new puppy but it is a big responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Your experience may differ from the general guidelines we’ve provided in this article. Make sure you closely monitor your Maltipoo and adjust wikibirthdays accordingly.
