Adventure, Tours, and Sightseeing
If you’re planning a visit to Hobart, you might wonder what sort of thing you can do once you’re there. The good news is that Hobart has lots of exciting activities and days out – you won’t be able to keep the smile from your face while you eat, drink, and stay in Hobart.
If you’re all about seeing the sights in a location and going on adventures, you have options when in Hobart. For example, the city sits at the bottom of Mount Wellington. So long as you visit at the right time of year, you’ll enjoy the various walking trails to the summit. Once at the top, you won’t believe your eyes as you look over the stunning scenery (like something on a postcard!).
Since the mountain will overlook you throughout the stay, it would be nice to see how Hobart looks from the peak. Standing nearly 4,200 feet above sea level, even the summer isn’t enough to remove the snow on many occasions. If you make it to the top, you can spend time with loved ones on the enclosed lookout. From here, you can look over the city, the World Heritage Area, the Derwent estuary, and more.
In terms of sightseeing, you could also enjoy the following:
- Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
- Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
- Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
- Salamanca Market
- Zoodoo Zoo
- The Waterfront
Of course, Hobart is also home to various tours where a local will take you around the area and tell you stories that you won’t hear anywhere else. Depending on your preferences, you could go on a walking tour or perhaps even a boat tour from the waterfront. Tours are the best way to combine sightseeing with adventure while also learning about the history of the location. Furthermore, tours take you to places that you otherwise might miss during a visit.
What Time of Year Should I Visit?
Ultimately, the time of year you choose to visit Hobart depends on what sort of trip you want in Hobart. For example, those looking for the best temperatures will need to visit between December and February. This being said, there’s nothing to say that you can’t have a vacation that creates timeless memories at any other time of year.
During the traditional summer months, between December and February, you’ll enjoy the waterfront and mountains in all their sunny glory. While temperatures fluctuate between the low 50s to the low 70s, you can partake in popular events such as the following:
- Party in the Paddock
- Falls Festival
- The Taste of Tasmania
- MONA FOMA
- Festivale
- Cygnet Folk Festival
During these summer months, you’ll also have glorious views from the summit of Mount Wellington. Yet, you will need to keep in mind that precipitation is high in December and only decreases slightly in January. If you visit during these months, be ready to put up the umbrella during showers. By February, precipitation drops and you’re more likely to enjoy the glorious blue skies suggested.
While June to August is typically the coldest period, there are still adventures to be had with Dark Mofo, The Longest Night Film Festival, Chocolate Winterfest (yum!), and various other events. If you prefer a winter getaway, Hobart is a beautiful location to explore. During these colder months, you’re unlikely to get anything above the mid 50s; also, some of the walking trails on Mount Wellington could be closed off for the season.
So long as you plan the trip that YOU want, there are many ways to explore the delightful city of Hobart!
