Finishing your degree can be daunting, as it’s the beginning of a new chapter in your life and signals a departure from the routine you’ve gotten used to. It’s also a time full of possibility, as you get to decide what you want to do next with your life, career and education. Discovering some possibilities and learning about what other graduates have done when they were in your shoes can help you make a smart choice that you won’t later regret. Below, we explore some options for what to do after you complete your degree.

    Become a registered nurse

If your bachelor’s degree is unrelated to nursing, you might be under the impression that you can’t pursue this career path, but that’s untrue. If you have a bachelor’s degree in any field and a cumulative GPA of 2.82 or above, you can enroll in an accelerated online nursing program, otherwise known as an accelerated BSN, from an institution such as the University of Indianapolis. These courses are designed to get you a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in a fast-tracked manner, enabling you to become a registered nurse and switch career paths with ease. These intensive programs typically last around four semesters.

    Pursue a master’s degree

Gaining a master’s degree can significantly enhance your earning potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a 25-year-old with a master’s degrees can earn approximately $12,000 per year more than a 25-year-old whose highest level of education is a bachelor’s degree. Pursuing a master’s degree can also deeply enhance your knowledge within your chosen subject, which opens up a range of career opportunities, including those in leadership positions. Master’s degree programs are focused on preparing you for a chosen career and equipping you with practical skills. These courses typically last around two years.

    Apply for graduate positions

If you’re looking to get straight into the world of work and start earning a full-time wage, it’s a good idea to try and secure a graduate position. These jobs usually offer generous remuneration packages and are designed to train graduates for important roles within companies, such as management and other leadership positions. Many major companies offer graduate programs, including JPMorgan Chase, Nestle and Morgan Stanley, to name just a few. These are highly competitive positions, so be sure to craft a high-quality resume and cover letter when applying. Having relevant experience also goes a long way.

    Take a gap year

Many graduates take advantage of the time in between graduation and getting a job by taking a gap year traveling the world. This can be incredibly rewarding and can also expose you to opportunities and ideas you may not have previously considered. Many graduates fall in love with traveling and end up becoming digital nomads, which are people who travel around and earn money by working online through their laptops or internet cafes.
