The correct way to disinfect a house
Read on to learn about how to efficiently and effectively keep your client’s household safe and healthy.
1. How to disinfect surfaces effectively
Clean all surfaces with soap and water daily. Disinfect a surface immediately if it has been touched by the sick household member. Be sure to clean their bathroom thoroughly with diluted bleach should you need to use it. If your surfaces cannot handle bleach, you can swap it out for a hospital-grade disinfectant.
2. Laundry, couches and other fabrics
Soft surfaces and clothes should be regularly laundered. You should set your washing machine to a warm or hot setting. You will need to wear gloves when handling laundry and upholstery that has been in contact with the infected person. If you can get your hands on them, try and use EPA-registered products. Make sure to clean and sterilise rugs and drapes as these surfaces can harbour Coronavirus. It’s OK to combine the sick person’s laundry with the rest of the household’s laundry. If you choose to do this, you will need to disinfect the laundry hamper and make sure to wash your hands afterwards for 20 seconds with soap. Be sure to use the hottest washing machine setting possible.
3. Avoiding skin to mouth transmission
Try your best not to touch your face. Most of us touch our face hundreds of times a day without even realising it. Always remember to wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water should you come into contact with the infected person or any items that they may have touched. This will be easier if the infected person stays in one room or one section of the house. This will limit the number of items they come into contact with. You will need to take extra care when handling plates they have eaten off. Wear gloves and wash up using very hot water.
4. Be responsible with their rubbish
You will need to give the infected person their own rubbish bin to use for tissues and any other waste. It will always need a bin bag. You will need to wear gloves when handling the bin or taking out their rubbish. Be sure to wash your hands afterwards for 20 seconds with soap and water.
