Practice makes you perfect
You need to familiarize yourself with all the test sections so that you don’t get surprised when the video instructions start to play during the test. CELPIP is a computer-based test, so you don’t have to worry about bringing things to the test venue. All you have to take along with you is an identification document.
Reading
Try to read English as much as possible regularly. You may read an English magazine, novel, online article, etc., to improve your comfort and speed while reading. When you see a difficult word while reading, try to decipher the meaning on your own.
You will have to read given comprehension that will get tougher as you proceed. You need to look for the keywords and understand the overall idea of the passage. There may be indirect questions. The answer to such questions is not mentioned. Instead, you will have to draw an inference to answer the question. Remember, CELPIP is not a memory test, so you don’t have to memorize anything. Instead, focus on reading carefully and try understanding the hidden meaning and other important details.
Listening
This section is designed to test your listening abilities. This section needs your special attention as it is all about focus. A passage will be played once; you must carefully listen and concentrate on remembering the main idea and supporting details. Remember, you will not get to hear it for the second time.
Writing
This section evaluates the writing skills of the candidates. This section has two parts, i.e., writing an email and responding to survey questions.
You will have access to a keyboard for writing. Candidates with good typing speed, like 40 words per minute, can complete this section easily and quickly. Therefore it is recommended to focus on increasing your typing speed.
There is a word limit of 150-200 words. You need to plan well before writing to ensure that you are able to include all the important details.
If your grammar is not so strong, you can take the help of either native English-speaking friends or join a class.
Speaking
This section has a maximum number of parts. A piece of advice- read the question, prepare your answer and then start speaking. You will have 30 seconds to go through the instruction and prepare your answer, and you will be given 60 seconds to speak.
You should practice speaking with a microphone. This will develop your confidence in speaking clearly and loudly into a microphone.
To pass the exam, candidates are advised to start CELPIP preparation as early as possible. This would enable them to give proper attention to all the sections, and also, you will have ample time for revising.
