Tom Hanks is an iconic Hollywood actor who has starred in many memorable films. His ability to portray a range of characters has earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the greatest actors of our time. Throughout his career, Hanks has challenged himself to take on a variety of difficult roles that require a great deal of skill and dedication. Here are three of Tom Hanks’ most challenging characters. The first is the titular character in the 1994 drama, Forrest Gump. In this role, Hanks had to convincingly portray a man with an intellectual disability. To do so, he had to work extensively with a dialect coach to perfect the Southern accent of his character. Additionally, he had to master the motions of a disabled person to make his performance believable. A second challenging character is Hanks’ portrayal of airline pilot Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger in the 2016 film, Sully. To prepare for this role, Hanks worked with Sullenberger himself, learning how to fly a plane and how to respond in emergency situations. Hanks also had to accurately portray the internal struggle of Sully’s experience as he was confronted with the difficult decision of whether or not to land a disabled plane on the Hudson River. Finally, Hanks took on the role of Captain John H. Miller in the 1998 epic, Saving Private Ryan. The character of Miller was a war-weary World War II veteran, and Hanks had to act out the physical and emotional exhaustion of a soldier who had seen too much in battle. To make his performance authentic, Hanks had to draw on his own experiences of playing other war veterans in order to accurately depict the pain and trauma of war. Tom Hanks has demonstrated his immense talent as an actor by taking on some of the most challenging roles in film history. His ability to authentically portray any character he chooses is a testament to his incredible skill as an actor.
