Despite a growing number of laws that mandate quality healthcare, most law suits involve poor communication. Patients often describe good communication in vague terms. Research has shown that some assumptions made by health professionals are counterproductive, such as warning a patient about impending pain under the guise of “being truthful” or “maintaining a professional demeanor.” While these are good intentions, they often lead to errors.
Poor communication between healthcare professionals and patients can have negative effects for both parties. Ineffective communication can result in an increased workload for physicians and nurses, a decreased patient satisfaction score, and repeated tests and investigations. Lack of effective communication can also cause the physician to make mistakes, resulting in additional costs. This means that healthcare providers must invest additional time in developing more efficient ways to communicate with patients and reduce the risk of harm to patients.
